the vital role that seaweed can play in addressing the global climate, biodiversity, and food security, we, the undersigned private sector and civil society leaders, pledge to support the development of a regenerative, sustainable, and inclusive seaweed industry that contributes to the global Blue Ocean Economy.

We align our efforts with the Seaweed Breakthrough and its guiding principles, ensuring the safe and sustainable development of the seaweed sector.

1. We recognize the roles seaweed can have in addressing climate change by enhancing water quality by capturing excess inorganic nutrients, mitigating coastal ocean acidification, contributing to blue carbon storage and providing habitats for marine biodiversity .

2. We value the multifaceted contributions of seaweeds to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Blue Ocean Economy, including generating sustainable livelihoods for small-scale farmers and harvesters, alleviating poverty, and enhancing food and nutrition security .

3. We highlight the responsible production of seaweeds to provide sustainable alternatives for food production, plant bio-stimulants, animal feeds, well-being and pharmaceutical products, bioplastics, biochar, materials and other fossil fuel-based product replacements, opening opportunities in new and emerging markets .

4. We acknowledge that the seaweed sector serves as a key driver of empowerment for women, youth, indigenous peoples and local communities in coastal areas of developing countries .

5. We emphasize the importance of integrating small-scale farmers into global seaweed value chains, prioritizing a shared-value approach that fosters sustainable livelihoods and equitable opportunities .

6. We affirm the necessity of protecting natural seaweed beds and their habitats in all regions of the world, tropical, temperate and arctic, promoting conservation efforts, while supporting restorative seaweed cultivation whenever possible rather than wild harvesting .

7. We express our support for the creation of a United Nations Task Force on Seaweed (UNTFS) to provide leadership, coordination, seaweed literacy and the human and financial resources necessary to develop a sustainable scale-up of the seaweed sector.

8. By joining this Pledge, signatories may commit to one or more of the following seaweed commitments:

o Sourcing seaweeds: to purchase a certain amount of seaweed for food products or as sustainable substitutes in products such as plant bio-stimulants, bioplastics, cosmetics, animal feed and supplements, materials, and other applications.

o Adopting sustainable practices: to source seaweeds from regenerative farming operations that follow best practices , as local as possible, thus ensuring minimal environmental impact and enhanced biodiversity support.

o Investing in innovation: to develop and implement advanced technologies for appropriate and responsible methods for the production of seaweeds globally and green processing to enhance efficiency and scale sustainable production into industrial size.

o Investing in research: to address knowledge gaps, enhance understanding of the potential benefits of seaweeds and support the sustainable expansion of seaweed production for diverse applications.

o Capacity building: to empower small-scale farmers by developing and strengthening their skill level through education, abilities, and resources of organizations and communities that rely on seaweeds for their livelihoods.

9. We call on other stakeholders to join the Seaweed Pledge, uniting efforts to harness the potential of seaweeds as a transformative resource for global sustainability and economic development.

Guidelines:

Your organization can become a pioneer by making a commitment to seaweed. The Global Seaweed Coalition collaboratively with UN agencies, the GlobalSeaweed-SUPERSTAR and other programs globally will support this ambition.

If your organisation is already taking steps to include seaweeds in its activities, this is a great opportunity to showcase and inspire other organizations to replicate your practices. Your organisation’s commitments will be made public at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3, June 2025) and the UN COP31 (Nov 2026).

If your organisation is considering investing in more activities involving seaweeds, the Seaweed Pledge provides a solid framework based on commitments to follow to ensure your organisation puts in place significant changes; it also offers a tool to communicate around these commitments.

For more information on making a Seaweed Pledge, please contact superstar@sams.ac.uk

["post-5220","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
